WE SALUTE YOU DR. ROY MITCHELL! (FORMER CHAIRMAN OF FLORIDA CARES)
A gentleman, scholar and alumnus homegoing
Dr. Roy I. Mitchell (1941-2008), alumnus and friend of Edward Waters College passed away July 28, 2008. Dr. Mitchell was a dedicated educator and long time mentor and role model to our area youth. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Edward Waters College, a committed alumnus, he served as the president of the National Alumni Association. 
Dr. Mitchell was born in Byronville, GA and resided in Jacksonville. He attended Matthew W. Gilbert Junior-Senior High School, Class of 1959. He won two scholarships to Edward Waters College where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He was a scholar athlete with the highest GPA. After receiving his bachelor’s he went into the Army for two years. Upon returning from the military, he was aspired to continue his education, he enrolled in Florida A&M University and earned his master’s degree and ultimate his doctorate in education from Florida Atlantic University.
A teacher, counselor, dean of students, vice principal and principal, Dr. Mitchell served in leadership roles for Paxon and Eugene Butler Middle Schools followed by positions at Lee and Raines High Schools.
Dr. Mitchell paved the way for African-American students at the University of Florida when he became the first African-American administrator from 1969 to 1971 as director of minority affairs.
Dr. Mitchell continued to be active in the community. He was a charter member of Chi chapter Omega Psi Phi fraternity and a board member of the Project Reach Foundation, a resource that assist 33 challenged schools find funding to improve students’ performance.
He retired in 2003 from the Duval County Public School System. His successor as chairman of Florida Cares Initiative will be Senator Tony Hill. Senator Hill never hesitated to step up to the plate for this critical program.
